Flying Fish Cabin

We offer you a unique experience. A time to talk, relax and chill out in the privacy of your own secluded slice of heaven.
The Flying Fish is a property located on 16 acres of regenerating bush on the edge of Tryphena Harbour, Great Barrier Island. The property reflects the owners’ love of the ocean and the bush, fishing, diving, water sports entertaining & gardening.
It is a couple of minutes’ walk to a small sandy beach, two boat ramps and a sheltered mooring area. It is a lovely 20 minute walk or five minute drive along the harbour edge to cafes, restaurants, shops and bars.
The central architecturally designed cabin is open plan, with one spacious room which cleverly incorporates living and sleeping spaces. Here you can cook in the fully set up kitchen, take a book from the shelves, sprawl out on the couch, listen to some music or simply sit and relax. Light up the wood fired pizza oven, the barbeque or the wood smoker and enjoy shared meals in our sheltered outdoor eating area, in front of the open fire.
The second cabin Tui, is nestled in a cluster of trees, overlooking the bay. It is a simply designed, romantic cottage with no electricity, just the lights from the lantern and the stars. Relax on the balcony with a wine or two, with just the sounds of the birds and watch the ebb and flow of the tide. Tui cabin accommodates one-adult couple and is not suitable for children.
A rough and tumble “Hibiscus hut” is located behind the central cabin in a bush setting-perfect for kids or teenagers. Set up with a couple of mattresses & a queen size bed, this room becomes a great sleep-over and fun space. Close enough to the central cabin, for convenience, but not too close to lose its quirky bush hideaway appeal.
We continue to expand our tropical plantings- attracting a variety of native birds including endangered kaka, kereru & pateke. Take a walk on the bushwalks through the ancient pohutukawa & puriri trees and marvel at the hand built stone bridge on the old Schooner Bay track built by settlers in 1865. Wander along the stream to see the glow-worms after dark – magical.
There are large lawns for games and energetic children and tent space is available. The property has a herb garden and young orchard with lemons and limes available most of the year for guests use. For those of you who like to fish we have a dingy and a fish cleaning area.
